My name is Ummar Shabbir. I came to America as an engineer with big dreams and empty pockets.

The beginning was humbling. I worked retail shifts and long nights behind gas station counters — whatever honest work would keep me going. Those years taught me something no degree ever could: what it feels like to work hard all day and still worry about what’s on your family’s dinner table.

Eventually, my IT skills opened doors, and I built a good career in technology. I was grateful. But something kept pulling at me. Every time I bought meat for my own family, I felt it — our community deserved better. Fresher cuts. Honest weights. Meat you can trust without a second thought. So I took everything those years taught me — the struggle, the discipline, the standards — and I opened Great Halal right here in Westmont, Illinois.

This isn’t just a grocery store. It’s a promise: 100% hand-slaughtered Zabiha halal meat, cut fresh every single day by our in-house Muslim butcher, HMS certified, weighed honestly after cleaning and trimming.
